Freeletics Review 2024 – What’s The Premium Version (Coach) Like?

Does this iconic fitness app still “HIIT” the mark? I tried it for 60 days to see for myself.

Freeletics Review

Freeletics has been muscling its way to the top of the app stores for over a decade… and stands out with its tailored workouts and AI-driven guidance.

Whether you’re just starting out or looking to refresh a workout plan that’s going nowhere, Freeletics offers features that adjust to your pace, preferences, and pain points.

As someone who’s tried and tested close to 70 health and fitness apps for this website, I know the struggle to find an app that truly ‘gets’ you – which is why this Freeletics review is different from most you’ll read online.

I share everything from setting up the app to logging workouts and tracking progress over time… as well as comparing it to similar apps and products, so you can get a really clear understanding of whether this is the app for you or not.

In a hurry? Here’s the bottom line… If you like HIIT and circuit workouts, I’d definitely recommend Freeletics. It’s a quality app that does exactly what you’d hope it would do. It’s also super affordable considering the features you have access to.

Freeletics – Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Quality exercise demonstrations – There’s over 350 exercises and workouts to choose from.
  • Easy to use – The UX is very clean and simple.
  • Warm up and cool down – Workouts include warm-ups and cool-downs to help improve performance and avoid injuries.
  • Adapt sessions – You can adapt sessions, such as swapping a longer workout for a quicker one, if you’re suddenly short on time.
  • Track progress – See your progress over time.
  • Adapts to your fitness level – The Coach feature uses AI to recommend workouts based on past performances.
  • Ability to add nutritional coaching – This is a feature that other apps like Fitbod don’t currently offer.

Cons

  • Mainly HIIT style workouts – Not ideal for those who like more traditional powerlifting or hypertrophy workouts.
  • No music or audio cues – No music or audio cues means the workouts could benefit from some background music.
  • The free version is incredibly limited – The free version feels very limited and doesn’t give you a great feel for what Freeletics can offer you.
  • Not a real coach – Although Freeletics often uses expressions like “your Coach” – it’s not an actual human coach, it’s their AI model that is computing data you input and exporting recommendations.

My Experience Using the App

Limited Free Version

You can download Freeletics for free, but you’ll soon notice that most features you actually want to use require a premium subscription.

You can try a few workouts for free, but ultimately, if you’re serious about using an app like Freeletics for your workouts, you’re going to have to get your wallet out.

Luckily, as far as apps go, the premium subscription is pretty competitively priced, starting at $1.44 a week.

Without a premium subscription, you just keep getting a “subscribe” button every time you try and access the main features.

Onboarding Quiz

When you first sign up for Freeletics Coach (premium), you answer 6 questions to help personalize the app recommendations.

This involves what equipment you have access to and your goals.

This is very similar to other apps like Fitbod and Alpha Progression.

Quiz is easy to use and helps personalize the experience.

Exercise Demonstrations

I really like the exercise demonstrations in Freeletics.

You can change the speed and angle of each exercise, which is a massive help if you’re unfamiliar with the movement.

Very good exercise demonstrations. I really can’t find any faults in this part of the app.

On-Screen Timer

When you start a workout, you’ll see how long is left for the exercise in the bottom left of the screen.

It also shows what’s next and how far you’ve made it through the workout.

The timer helps make following workouts very easy. Using the app’s built-in timer also means the recommendations for future workouts is more accurate.

Workout Preview

Before you start a workout, you get a short description of what you’ll be doing and how long it takes.

This includes seeing the video demonstrations, which again, is great if you’ve never done some of these movements and want to double check your technique before starting.

This preview page also tells you if you need any equipment, such as dumbbells or a bench.

I really like the workout preview page. it’s very easy to understand.

Community Forum

Freeletics includes a community forum feature… but considering the number of users Freeletics has, we found the engagement wasn’t that high.

Personally, I didn’t get much value from this part of the app.

Forum and community feature is located in the bottom navigation.

Clean Layout

Freeletics makes it really easy to understand what each workout involves.

The workout summary includes an image, duration and exercise name to help you visualize what you’re about to do.

The simple design makes it easy to understand.

Logging Workouts

By logging workouts, it gives the AI Coach more data to better customize recommendations.

This will also allow you to see your progress over time with certain exercises and workouts.

Log workouts to get better workout recommendations.

How it Compares to Similar Fitness Apps

Fitbod

Due to Freeletics releasing its Coach feature that uses AI to help create a tailored and personalized workout experience, the value proposition starts to feel very similar to Fitbod.

However… Fitbod is really designed for gym workouts that follow a reps/sets/volume style routine, as opposed to HIIT routines. If you prefer that style of exercise, Fitbod is definitely hard to beat.

Asana Rebel

Asana Rebel combines yoga with fitness for a unique approach. While it excels in integrating mindfulness and fitness, Freeletics provides a more intensive and varied workout experience.

Our Asana Rebel review outlines more details about this popular workout app.

Berg Movement

If you want to take your bodyweight HIIT workouts to another level, a dedicated calisthenics app might be worth considering.

Berg Movement is an app I recently discovered, and it includes some fantastic features and training plans.

Who is Freeletics Best Suited To?

Freeletics is a versatile fitness app, ideal for a wide range of users. It’s particularly beneficial for:

  • Beginners and Intermediates – Freeletics offers workouts for various levels, making it accessible and challenging for both newbies and those with some fitness experience.
  • Busy Individuals Seeking Efficient Workouts – With options for short, high-intensity workouts, it’s perfect for those who want effective exercise in a limited time, especially with the Coach feature allowing you to provide feedback.
  • Home Workouts – For individuals preferring to workout at home or with minimal equipment, Freeletics provides ample bodyweight routines.

Bottom Line

Whether you’re starting your fitness journey or seeking to progress it, Freeletics offers a dynamic and adaptable path to help you reach your goals.

If you like HIIT workouts, I’d definitely recommend giving Freeletics a go.
