Fitness AI Review 2022 – What’s This Workout Planner Like?

Fitness AI Review

If you’re looking for a new fitness app, you may well have come across a workout logger called Fitness AI.

Promising to harness the power of artificial intelligence to help craft more personalized and effective workouts, this fitness app has gained quite a bit of traction over the past year.

But what’s it actually like to use… and how does it compare to other popular workout apps like Fitbod and Freeletics?

In this Fitness AI review, we provide an overview of everything you need to know, including what we like, don’t like and ultimately if it’s worth the money or not.

In a hurry? Here’s the bottom line, we really like Fitness AI, it’s a simple yet effective workout planner… It didn’t, however, make this year’s shortlist of the best workout apps. Click below to see what apps are currently our top picks (including unique discount codes). 👇

What is Fitness AI?

Launched in April 2019, Fitness AI appeared to come out of nowhere and claim a rightful spot as a legitimate workout logger and planner. Only available on iOS, the app was created by Jake Mor and was an enhancement from an app he made previously called Lift Log.

Fitness AI used over 5 million workouts from Lift Log’s database to help create a unique algorithm that could help create an effective workout structure for users.

Although it’s a relatively new app, it’s quickly gained a lot of very positive reviews and feedback, suggesting the way it provides recommendations is useful.

(Update for 2022 – It looks like Jake Mor has set up a new payment company, so we’re not entirely sure what the future holds for Fitness AI).

How Much Does Fitness AI Cost?

Fitness AI costs $89.99/year (we think)… but there are quite a lot of prices listed in the app store, from as low as $39.99/year, all the way up to an eye-watering $129.99/year.

There is currently a 60% discount offer on the website (which we’re pretty sure is always there), so it’s well worth looking for discounts, as it seems they’re happy to offer quite big promo offers for users.

(Although by following that offer, we were then presented with just 40% off 🤷).

Fitness AI Vs Fitbod

As soon as we installed Fitness AI, one of the first things that came to mind was the comparison with Fitbod.

Fitbod is largely the most popular workout app that’s powered by artificial intelligence, so we thought it was worth providing a more direct comparison between them both.

The table below provides a quick summary of some of the main info and features that we think is important if you’re looking at both apps for logging your workouts. Ultimately, they are pretty similar and you might want to consider trying both out.

What We Like About It

Highlights What Muscles Are Worked In Videos

Although we tend to prefer real human demonstrations of exercises, the use of graphics means the muscles worked are highlighted, which makes it very easy to understand how your workouts are activating and challenging your muscles.

This works better for isolation movements, compared to compound lifts, such as deadlifts, where lots of muscles are going to be engaged.

But it’s a nice feature, especially for beginners to help them understand which muscles they should be working during a movement.

Easy To Use

If you’re just getting started with lifting weights, it can be daunting and confusing where to start.

Do you opt for a 3 day barbell split… or perhaps follow a dumbbell workout plan?

With Fitness AI, you don’t really need to worry about this as the app will basically tell you exactly what exercises, reps and sets to do (based on what you set as your goal).

Nice Design

Fitness AI offers a really nice user interface, with an intuitive design. It makes logging workouts more enjoyable.

Especially compared to free workout loggers, the inclusion of more visually appealing fonts, graphics and designs, really does make the whole experience better.

If you’re a sucker for a well designed app, Fitness AI won’t disappoint.

Effective Gym Logger

At this point, we’ve really tried most of the top workout loggers… and Fitness AI is definitely one of the most effective solutions for logging your workout stats. The app is simple, easy to navigate and we didn’t experience any bugs.

Works with Apple Watch

Fitness AI works with Apple Watch which is likely a great feature if you have one.

This can mean you are able to track your workout stats without having to use your phone (which can be annoying in the gym).

Things to Consider

Exercise Demonstrations are Graphics

Fitness apps, especially free ones, often use illustrated graphics to demonstrate exercises… whether that’s pictures or videos.

This is fine, to a certain degree… but when you compare it to the likes of exercise demonstrations in apps like Fitbod that use real human instructors, the contrast is stark… and we think this definitely favours apps that use real humans.

By watching real humans do the exercises, you can see the subtle body movements or even how they get into position… which is a massive help for beginners.

Sometimes the graphic illustrations just don’t appear to move quite as you’d expect.

This largely depends on the type of movement, but especially for beginners, learning correct form for something like a B Stance Deadlift, is critical.

Only Available on iOS

Unfortunately, Fitness AI only works on iOS.

There’s no sign of an Android app any time soon, so if you are on Android, we’d definitely recommend Fitbod or Alpha Progression as the best options that work on any mobile device.

It still baffles us the amount of developers that build apps exclusively on iOS for Apple, when Android has around 86% of the market share worldwide (and this number is continuing to grow). For us, one of the key ingredients of being crowned the “ultimate fitness app” would be to be inclusive by design, which means working on any device. So that’s a thumbs down for Fitness AI.

Price

The app store has quite a lot of different prices listed. There are currently 5 different annual membership prices… and we’re not entirely sure if that’s for different features or just various discounts you can claim.

The Annual Membership 11 is $129.99 which feels very steep compared to alternative workout loggers.

When we went through the checkout process, we were offered it for $89.99/year, with a (roughly) 40% discount applied… so $52/year.

Alternatives

Fitbod

Fitbod is currently our top pick for both weightlifting loggers and workout apps.

You can read our full review of Fitbod to learn all the features and why we rate it highly… but to summarize, it just does the basics very well and offers you a clear roadmap for getting fitter. The videos, logging and automatic programming are second to none, making it a fantastic tool for both beginners and experienced lifters.

The workout plans that Fitbod created for us seemed most appropriate from our experience and similar to what we’d expect to get from truly personalized coaching. The exercises and recommended reps/sets were very close to what we’d hope for… Fitness AI were good, but not as accurate.

The app also comes in very affordably at just $5/month when you buy the annual plan and use the link below.

Alpha Progression

Alpha Progression could almost be confused with Fitness AI in terms of branding… the logos are almost identical!

The apps are also very similar in terms of how they function too.

Alpha Progression uses real human exercise demonstrations instead of graphics, which we prefer, and the fitness plans generated were slightly more accurate in our experience.

Alpha Progression leans more towards hypertrophy and bodybuilding, due to the frequent inclusion of 10RM stats… so if you want to gain muscle effectively, it’s an app worth exploring.

We’ve got a detailed review of Alpha Progression to help you learn more too.

Or you can claim 20% off your first month by clicking below (which also includes a 7 day free trial).

Freeletics

Freeletics has long been one of the most popular workout apps. Long before the boom in home workouts, Freeletics have been using their exercise plans to help users get fitter.

With a userbase of roughly 52 million… it’s clear Freeletics resonates with a lot of people.

Freeletics’ free version offers a lot of value, which has likely helped them amass such a large userbase… but the premium plan is where a lot of the more advanced features are found.

The workouts are very well crafted in Freeletics and the demonstrations from various angles helps too.

Freeletics offers all sorts of workout styles, but we’ve found it’s best for HIIT and bodyweight movements. It’s more about tracking your workouts in general, compared to logging big heavy lifts (like Fitness AI does).

You can also grab 30% off Freeletics by clicking below.

Bottom Line

We’re very much spoilt for choice at the moment with fitness apps and gym loggers.

There is a selection of free weightlifting apps that allow you to record workout stats, but if you want to really measure your progress over time and benefit from automatic workout recommendations based on artificial intelligence, an app like Fitness AI is well worth considering.

Based on the features and price, it’s probably worth signing up with Fitbod, Alpha Progression and Freeletics too, to see which one you naturally like (all of which offer a free trial of their apps).
