Golfers need more than a technically sound swing. The body must produce force, control rotation, and maintain useful movement through the hips, trunk, and shoulders. That makes strength training valuable, but only when it supports the movements golf actually demands.
For golfers who already train with kettlebells, free weights, or bodyweight exercises, the goal isn’t simply to lift more. It’s to build strength that transfers to a fast, controlled swing without sacrificing movement quality.
Build a strong base before chasing swing speed
A golf swing happens quickly, but speed still depends on the ability to produce force. Stronger legs and hips give you a better physical base for generating that force and controlling it throughout the swing.
A 2024 systematic review in Sports Medicine found associations between clubhead speed and both upper- and lower-body strength. Explosive qualities, particularly jump impulse and upper-body explosive strength, showed especially strong relationships with clubhead speed. The research doesn’t mean every golfer should start performing maximum-effort jumps or heavy lifts. It does suggest that strength and power deserve a place alongside technical practice. Start with movements that develop general lower-body strength. Squats, split squats, lunges, and hinge patterns such as deadlifts can all fit. The specific exercise matters less than performing a movement you can control and gradually make more challenging.
Kettlebells are particularly useful here because one tool can cover several qualities. Goblet squats build leg strength, swings train explosive hip extension, and loaded carries challenge your ability to maintain posture while moving.
Train the body for rotation without copying the golf swing
One common mistake is trying to make every gym exercise look like a golf swing. Adding rotation to a movement doesn’t automatically make it more specific to golf.
Your strength sessions and golf practice have different jobs. Practice develops swing technique. The gym develops physical qualities that give you more options when you swing.
A well-designed golf fitness training program may therefore contain exercises that don’t resemble golf at all. Squats can develop force through the legs. Rows strengthen the upper back. Carries challenge trunk stability. Medicine ball throws can introduce faster force production once you have enough strength and movement control.
You can also include rotational exercises, but treat them as physical training rather than swing rehearsals. Light rotational drills, controlled thoracic rotation, and appropriately programmed throws can train movement in the transverse plane without asking a weighted exercise to duplicate your technique with a club.

Strength and mobility should work together
Golfers sometimes treat strength and mobility as opposing goals. That creates an unnecessary trade-off. You don’t have to choose between becoming stronger and moving well.
Mobility is most useful when you can control the positions you reach. Being able to rotate farther isn’t particularly valuable if you lose balance or positioning as soon as you get there.
That changes how mobility work can fit into training. Instead of spending most of a session on passive stretching, combine mobility with controlled strength where appropriate. A split squat, for example, can strengthen the legs while asking the hips and ankles to move through a useful range. A properly performed Turkish get-up challenges shoulder control, trunk stability, and movement through several positions.
Kettlebell training also gives you options for combining these qualities. Halos can expose the shoulders and upper back to controlled movement, while carries and overhead holds require you to stabilize the positions you’ve created.
The important distinction is between usable mobility and simply accumulating range. Golfers need enough movement to perform their chosen swing effectively, then enough strength and coordination to control it.
Progress from strength to faster force production
Building strength is only part of the process. Golf is a fast sport, and eventually your training should account for how quickly force must be produced.
That doesn’t mean beginners need complicated power exercises. If you’ve only recently started strength training, improving basic squat, hinge, push, pull, and carry patterns can provide plenty of useful work.
As your training experience grows, faster exercises can take a larger role. Kettlebell swings are an obvious example because they train rapid hip extension rather than slow grinding strength. Medicine ball throws and appropriate jumping variations can serve a similar purpose.
The sequence matters. Develop enough movement skill and strength to control an exercise before increasing its speed. Turning every lift into an explosive movement before you’ve built that foundation usually adds complexity without improving the quality of the session.
You also don’t need to exhaust yourself to train power. Speed-based exercises depend on high-quality efforts. When repetitions become noticeably slower or technique deteriorates, you’re no longer training the same quality.
Keep gym work in its proper role
The weight room can’t fix poor clubface control, inconsistent contact, or a technical swing problem. Those belong on the range with appropriate coaching and practice.
What strength training can do is improve the physical foundation underneath your technique. Stronger legs, better-controlled rotation, a stable torso, and the ability to produce force quickly give you more capacity to work with.
For golfers, that makes the best training program less about finding one perfect “golf exercise” and more about building a body that can repeatedly produce and control the movements the sport requires.
